Addiction is democratic. By Sheryl Rahme E-mail

I believe that Addiction is a truly democratic illness. It affects the mind, body and soul. People can definitely be addicted to other things other than drugs and alcohol. I rarely see someone with one addiction. One of the largest struggles we have in dealing with our clients is helping them see that they are more than likely addicted to alcohol as well as their drug of choice.

They truly struggle with the concept that if they are addicted to one substance, then they are more than likely addicted to many as well as certain behaviours. Our clients with Gambling and or Sex addictions struggle with exploring their relationship with alcohol and our clients with an alcohol addiction struggle to look at their sexual behaviour and gambling behaviours and/or addictions.
Our clients who have an addict or alcoholic in their families, find it hard to look at their own addictive behaviours like co-dependency, workaholism and alcohol or pill consumption. This is a frightening yet fascinating disease that is truly democratic. It doesn't care who you are, what you are, what you do or have, what race, religion or educational background you come from. None of us is truly safe from developing this disease, yet it is completely treatable. We treat it with honesty, openmindedness, willingness and integrity. Try recovery, it is worth it!!!!
