A relapse does not have to be part of the process but is usually happens to be part of the process of recovery. A relapse is when old negative, usually obsessive compulsive using behaviours, thoughts, attitudes and lifestyle patterns return. It usually happens before the addicted person uses for the first time after a period of abstinence. Thus a person can be in full blown “addict-mode” even though they haven’t used. Using again is only the last part of a relapse. If relapse does occur it is useful to learn from the relapse and past mistakes so that the person’s treatment plan can be altered in order to prevent future relapses.
